Canadian Facts on Local Food

It’s easy to underestimate our reliance on food imports, because Canada has such an agriculturally rich history. Over the past few decades, though, things have drastically changed.

Check out this video, by Hellmann’s, for a dose of reality. It’s a great reminder that just because we can grow our own food, doesn’t mean we are. And that doesn’t make much sense on many, many levels.

Get the Kids Thinking Local

According to their website, Hellmann’s of the mayonnaise reputation uses local, Canadian eggs and Canola oil in their products. That’s enough for them to get on the eat local bandwagon — they’ve have put together a really fun, Take Action site that would be great to get the kids on for a little education on local food.

You can choose your province and find out what foods are in season, list your local farmer’s market, post a recipe, or submit a petition to local grocers to carry more local food.
